Predicament: When Your Style Becomes Trend

I never promised consistency. So here I am a year and a half later. In fashion, it seems one has to discuss and cover trends in order to stay relevant. As you may know, I am not one to chase trends. I embrace the idea that everyone should possess their own personal style. In my mind, only following trends reflects a lack of originality and usually ends poorly for one’s wallet and the environment (looking at you, fast fashion). However, this brings up the issue of when your style becomes trend.

All the true tie-dye loving Deadheads or long-time skaters are probably currently experiencing this. We are currently is the throws of the storm. Yesterday I walked into a Forever21 looking for a pair of white running shorts (to be tossed after being dirtied and dyed this weekend when I run The Color Run 5k). The store was a explosion of colour (and disarray). Tie-dye lined the racks and were sloughed in piles across display tables. The moment had come. While tie-dye was starting to appear a couple years ago in high-fashion on the runways, it has now reached the mass markets. As I walked the streets of Soho, I lost count of the windows with mannequins outfitted in tie-dyed paraphernalia. Soon the busy streets of Soho will be a sea of tie-dye (which to be honest will be quite an upgrade from last summer’s leopard print midi skirts and fisherman’s caps).

Now comes the dilemma, what if you really love tie-dye? You were wearing it before it was cool, but now you look like every other trend-chaser. You actually listened to and love the band whose tee you are wearing. My advice: It will happen to us all at some point. Wear your tie-dye proudly in the knowledge that two years from now you’ll still be rocking your own style while fashion has moved on. View it as the rest of the world finally recognizing what great style you have. I’m featuring some of these stylish guys who continue to rock their tie-dye as the rest of the world joins in on the party.

P.S. Interesting how as men’s and women’s fashion blend, they are now experiencing trends at the same time – bucket hats, wide-leg pants, tie-dye,etc.
